Pandora |
||
4/2/06, 10:32 PM ...or use Pandora. It's based on the Music Genome Project which effectively maps out the basic 'elements' of hundreds of thousands of artists and songs. For instance, a guitar riff led tune with male vocals in a major key (e.g Aerosmith?) can be defined as having similar elements to, say, Led Zeppelin. Of course we all know which is the better band, but the Music Genome Project by-passes this bias and focuses entirely on what constitutes the 'genetic make-up' of your favourite tunes. This is where Pandora comes in: it's a very polished 'personal radio' station, which streams over the internet, in which you choose what kind of music you want to hear, and Pandora then returns with music with the same 'genes' as your original choice for you to listen to. You can select whether or not Pandora is getting things right and it will change course depending on how you react to it's findings. It's surprising how accurate it can be, and the database just keeps on growing! Try typing in your favourite band into the search box above, and let pandora show you similar bands and sounds - you never know, you might find your new favourite artist! | [ 0 trackbacks ] | permalink | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ( 3 / 1169 )

The Shout Out Louds |
||
4/2/06, 10:06 PM The Shout Out Louds!
They're a Swedish outfit, pretty new to the scene, but I predict that their debut single The Comeback (from the debut album 'Howl Howl Gaff Gaff') will make an appearance in the charts soon enough. What do they sound like? I guess, a mixture between The Strokes and The Last Days of April, maybe with some Pedro the Lion thrown in. They're doing a special one-off gig with The Magic Numbers at Brixton Academy on the 16th Feb, then a Fabriclive session (at Fabric, duh) on the 17th if you want to catch them while they're in London. Otherwise, just listen to the Fuggled Radio | [ 0 trackbacks ] | permalink | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ( 3 / 1371 )

Foundation Scheme Fiasco |
||
6/12/05, 02:22 PM Only doctors and medical students will find this post of any interest. As I write, it seems that the new foundation scheme application process has turned into a nightmare for both final year students and the deaneries they are applying to.
The new process involves each student filling in an online form, similar to the style of the UCAS form. There are ten questions to be answered in 75 word paragraphs, designed to allow students to descibe their leadership, teamwork, academic and non-academic skills. The form is submitted online along with a list of up to 40 jobs the candidate wishes to apply for. The deadline for submission had been set at midday 5th december. However, many candidates logging on to the website at www.newdoctor.org over the week-end found themselves unable to either log on or submit any information. Many medical schools have been writting letters of complaint to the governing bodies, and as such the deadline was extended until 10am 6th December. Many students stayed up all night trying to submit their application, others are concerned about lost data as the form is reported to be returning error messages to some students. What can be expected is an uprising from the student bodies across the UK, striving to claim fairness in a system which clearly could not cope with the job it was designed to do. Dean's of various medical schools have stated that they will stand behind any student disadvantaged by the system, and have organised emergency meetings to be held today (6th) to try and pool together stories and opinions from the swell of angry final year medics. On a personal note, I spent at least four hours on Sunday night trying to log on and submit my form. I was unable to log-on most of Monday, and when I finally managed to all of my 40 shortlisted posts had been erased. Once I had relisted my choices, the submit button returned an error constantly for about 2 hours. Then finally at 3am this morning it worked, and I received a confirmation e-mail saying that I had successfully placed my submission. Of course, whether or not that is true is left to be seen! I can understand why there is a huge mistrust of this system... it just doesn't seem to be up to the challenge. | [ 0 trackbacks ] | permalink | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ( 3 / 826 )

Halloween |
||
31/10/05, 05:19 PM Why do we celebrate Halloween? It's an old Irish pagan ritual isn't it?
Anyway, without ruining the spirit (hehe) of things, here's my pumpkin effort this year. Only cost £1.40. ![]() | [ 0 trackbacks ] | permalink | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ( 3 / 933 )
