I think my egg is off...
7/4/06, 01:14 AM

I got this idea after chatting to someone about the distinct lack of turkey eggs in the shops. I have come to the conclusion the only reason you can't buy turkey eggs is that they're actually like this. I couldn't get photographic evidence, so I created one myself in Photoshop. Wondrous.

Reloaded - graphic portfolio
4/4/06, 09:39 PM
I love great graphic design, especially blended with a slick website and an off-the-hook attitude. Enter Christophe Herbinet and his Reloaded portfolio for 2006, with his brilliant and annoyingly simple presentation of his interesting and varied graphic work.

If I had to make a new website, and if I was as good as this - this is how I'd make it. So there ; ) Lovely backing soundtrack too! No wonder he's won so many awards.

Nizlopi

Nizlopi have been around a little too long for me to say that they're a brilliant 'new' duo, but I am going to rave about them nonetheless!

Their second album 'Half These Songs Are About You' is a very uplifting piece of folk/acoustic from this UK duo. You will probably have heard the JCB Song - a classic yet to become a classic, that's for sure.

Well, the whole album is simply beautiful. The vocals carry a very English accent throughout, but are perfectly matched with the intricate melodies on the double bass and guitars. My personal favourite is the break-up song 'Wash Away' - maybe because the sentiments ring true to me right now! As always, you can find it on the Fuggled radio

Pandora
4/2/06, 10:32 PM
I had a few e-mails while I was away from people asking me how they can find these weird, eclectic, unheard of bands like I seem to do. Well, there's two ways: enjoy music, enjoy exploring, listen to random CD's, go to record shops/gigs/live events and just try new stuff...

...or use Pandora. It's based on the Music Genome Project which effectively maps out the basic 'elements' of hundreds of thousands of artists and songs. For instance, a guitar riff led tune with male vocals in a major key (e.g Aerosmith?) can be defined as having similar elements to, say, Led Zeppelin. Of course we all know which is the better band, but the Music Genome Project by-passes this bias and focuses entirely on what constitutes the 'genetic make-up' of your favourite tunes.

This is where Pandora comes in: it's a very polished 'personal radio' station, which streams over the internet, in which you choose what kind of music you want to hear, and Pandora then returns with music with the same 'genes' as your original choice for you to listen to. You can select whether or not Pandora is getting things right and it will change course depending on how you react to it's findings. It's surprising how accurate it can be, and the database just keeps on growing!

Try typing in your favourite band into the search box above, and let pandora show you similar bands and sounds - you never know, you might find your new favourite artist!

The Shout Out Louds
4/2/06, 10:06 PM
So, I got back from Australia, and blimey - it ain't half cold in the UK! Still, plenty of reason to stay indoors and appreciate some of the fine bands I discovered while away - like this band;
The Shout Out Louds!

They're a Swedish outfit, pretty new to the scene, but I predict that their debut single The Comeback (from the debut album 'Howl Howl Gaff Gaff') will make an appearance in the charts soon enough. What do they sound like? I guess, a mixture between The Strokes and The Last Days of April, maybe with some Pedro the Lion thrown in. They're doing a special one-off gig with The Magic Numbers at Brixton Academy on the 16th Feb, then a Fabriclive session (at Fabric, duh) on the 17th if you want to catch them while they're in London. Otherwise, just listen to the Fuggled Radio
