Frank Turner

The last time I saw this guy was back at school. His band 'The Badger Doritos' performed at morning assembly - and quite simply no-one was prepared for the musical/metal onslaught that was to wake us up that morning. All I remember is the word 'victim' written across his chest and some rather loud screaming and a very confused looking bass player who gave up half way through the first song.

Frank Turner since formed the band 'Million Dead' which had substantial success in the UK with radio play and a heavy fan-base (well, definately more success than the other band 'Kneejerk'!). Now all that screaming is over, Frank has become part of a new emerging 'Folk/punk' sound, and his debut album 'Sleep Is For The Week' is a completely refreshing turn in his musical career. The video above caught my attention not because I knew him, but because it is genuinally a great track, and clever video. (It reminds me a little of 'Being John Malkovich').
I can't yet comment on the album itself - though after listening to a few tracks from his MySpace I have already pre-ordered my copy!

PS.Frank, if you're reading this, I still have recordings of The Badger Doritos which we made in the new music tech department back in 1997!

Heroes
21/12/06, 12:17 AM
After a brief hiatus of exams, followed by boozing and finding a job, I managed to find the time to catch up on some of the really 'important' things in life - such as watching all currently aired episodes of Heroes back to back.
I'd heard good stuff about this 'new' show (I say 'new' because it's been out in the States for months, but isn't yet known over here in the UK), and decided to sneak a peak using the rather anticapitalist-yet-highly-rewarding method of BitTorrent (if you don't know what that is, you didn't hear about it from me). 13 or so hours later, and I'm gagging for more.
The show follows the story arcs of various people who begin to discover new supernatural abilities. For instance, one guy (pic left) thinks he can fly, another girl can spontaneously heal herself, and a cop can read crooks minds (and his wife's...). Needless to say, there's the usual pre-requesite 'evil supervillain', though even he remains somewhat vague until the season truly progresses. The storylines all come together around a central plot involving a future atomic explosion that threatens to destroy NY city (as predicted by a psychic painter/comic-book artist, and seen by a time-bending Japenese office worker) - and as our 'Heroes' come to master their abilities, the story flips and twists in a similar style to Lost (without the excessive flashbacks), and neatly tied up with a large wink to good ol' comic books.

As I write this, there's a whole month to wait till the next episode comes out on 22nd Jan - plenty of time for you to get your grubby mitts on the first eleven parts and get munching that popcorn. My mind-controlling abilities tell me that you will love this show!
