End of the World (as we know it)
10/9/08, 12:04 PM
The Large Hadron Collider at CERN was switched on this morning, despite law suits against the organisation claiming that the experiment would inadvertantly bring about the apocalypse. Fears of creating a black hole powerful enough to suck planet earth out of existence, or perhaps a nuclear anti-matter explosion were dismissed as nonsense by CERN, and the 27km machine was turned on right on cue.
Particles of hydrogen stripped of electrons (hadrons) won't be smashed into each other for a couple of weeks, as it will take time to calibrate the machine and learn to 'steer' the tiny particles using the super-dense multi-tonne electro magnets - meaning that the end of the world isn't here...yet. No-one knows what will happen when the experiment does reach the atom-pulverising phase however. Maybe REM will be right after all...

Amazing Gremlins Fan Film
6/9/08, 04:04 PM
Sacha Feiner, a Belgian special effects amateur, always had a dream of making Gremlins 3 after being inspired by the original movie's special effects. Having created complex models of other film fantasy props (including full Alien and Pinhead costumes) he decided to try his rotoscoping skills out and made several Gremlin 'puppets' from scratch, enlisted the help of family and friends - and then made the best fan tribute you have ever seen - all from his home studio. Watch the video - then the 'making of documentary' - mind-blowing!

Ubiquity
27/8/08, 09:46 AM

Ubiquity for Firefox from Aza Raskin on Vimeo
The ramifications for this new browser add-on are jaw-dropping. The theory behind it is simple - let people tell the web what to do using plain English, not code. For example - you want to organise a birthday party for a friend at a venue and then invite a group of people. With Ubiquity you should be able to simply type in something like this - 'Book table for 20 at X restaurant next Wednesday 8pm for a birthday party, add it to my calendar, and invite X group of people with RSVP'.
Now that may sound like a pipe dream - but it's getting much, much closer. Already simple command lines are available - such as 'Google such-and-such' or 'Wiki such-and-such'. There even commands for weather (Just type 'Weather in London UK') and quite impressively the 'email this' command - just go to any page and type in 'Email this to X' and it's done!
You can download it now and have a play - and even add your own commands if your so inclined. Watch this space - I have a feeling this is going to be a big one!

Tenori-On - must-have music gizmo
26/8/08, 04:19 PM
I was just browsing through a local keyboard store today looking for some sheet music - and came across this interesting little gadget sitting in the corner of the store. It's Yamaha's latest must-have gizmo - the Tenori-On. The flashing lights got me sucked in - and after playing around with it for half an hour I was most definately hooked. Let me try to explain - the Tenori-On is in essence a digital music instrument, along the lines of both drum machine and synthesiser - all mixed up with a crazy visual LED user interface. Basically, this is one cool toy. There are several different ways to 'play' it - my favourite is the option to loop sounds over and over while building new sounds and layers into your 'song' (as shown here). The result is something utterly transfixing and addictive - and sounds a bit like an ambient dance track (The Album Leaf perhaps?) though one entirely created by you and constantly changable in realtime as it plays. I can see the potential for this 'instrument' - apparently Bjork has even had one during her latest tour. The only thing holding me back from getting one is the £700 price tag...

Tim's House - Kate Walsh
20/8/08, 05:57 PM

One of my neighbours happens to be a music producer (how cool is that?) - and this is his latest creation - Kate Walsh's new album Tim's House. The album name actually spawns from said neighbour (Tim) and his house, which is where the magic happens. I suppose they could have mentioned me for putting up with the excessive noise produced the past few months (* not strictly true).
Have a listen - good for those quiet moments.
