Photoshop Tutorial: Simple and clean logo design

Tools: Photoshop CS
Level: Basic
Time: 20-30 minutes

Here's a nice simple logo design that could be tweeked for almost any purpose. The basic colour scheme is modern and fresh and the text is clear. The logo portrays a simple message of creativity or birth (the egg), and ideas that sprout from it.

Start with a decent sized canvas.
I always start with 1000x1000 pixels, 72 dpi as it allows me to scale down if needed.

Step 1 - the background

Fill your background with a light grey colour - I used #DCDBDB.
To get the mild canvas look, simply add a texture filter.
Filter > Texture > Texturiser and use the 'Canvas' setting.
Fiddle with the setting as you like - or use mine, as below.

Step 2 - drawing the egg

Create a new layer - and call it Egg.
Select the eliptical marquee tool and drag out an elipse. Fill it with pure white.
Again using the marquee tool draw a smaller elipse inside the first one.
Now select 'Subtract from Selection' (top left) and hit Enter.
You should have something like this.

Select the layer's blending options and add an outer glow with the following settings.
This adds a soft grey shadow equally around the egg.
For a super-clean look you can do without the shadow entirely!

Step 3 - the bubbles

Create a new layer - and call it Bubbles
Change your foreground colour to a light blue. I used #A2D0E3.
Drag out circles whilst holding SHIFT using the eliptical marquee tool.
You can create whatever pattern you like.

To create the shadow around the bubbles, go to the layer's blending options and add a drop shadow.
Be sure to change the contour to a 'peak'.

Stay in blending options and add a reflected gradient overlay at 40%.
Set the mode to 'Overlay'

Step 4 - the main text

Create a new layer - call it mainText
The text font used here is Bauhaus 93 in pure black. I have used the normal default settings at 200pt.
Type your text into the centre of the inner elipse.
Using the character window (Window > Character) adjust the font spacing to your liking.
Here the font spacing is set to +200.

Add an outer glow and colour overlay as shown below.
Again, make sure your contour pattern is set to a 'peak'.

You should have acheived this effect.

Step 5 - the minor text

In a new layer called minorText use the same Bauhaus 93 font in black.
You can place this text wherever you like, but for good typography try and make your minor text's width the same as the main text.
I have typed this in 80pt and highlighted important words in a larger font.
You can use the character window again to adjust the font spacing.

Place your minor text wherever you choose - inside the elipse will look good as a stand-alone logo, and placing the text outside would suit print media better.

Here's my final result.
